A scholarly paper co-authored by Mr. Sejun Woo and Associate Professor Kaiji Motegi has been published from the Communications in Statistics – Theory and Methods; CSTM is a refereed statistics journal indexed in Science Citation Index Expanded (2022 Impact Factor = 0.8). Mr. Woo graduated from the Department of Economics, Kobe University in March 2023, and he is currently a master’s student at the Graduate School of Business Administration, Keio University. Mr. Woo began to write this paper jointly with his academic supervisor, Associate Professor Motegi, when he was an undergraduate junior at Kobe University.
In their paper, Mr. Woo and Associate Professor Motegi have derived new theoretical properties of the exponentiation approximation of the birthday paradox, a classical problem in probability and statistics. The birthday paradox has been well known in the literature, and the authors have discovered and elaborated a surprising blind spot there. It is a notable achievement that a paper authored by an undergraduate student (at the time of writing) is published from a SCIE journal.
